Divorce, addiction, the expansion of individualism, peer pressures, harsh economic realities , serious illness, and many more forces are threatening to all family types. These forces can too easily turn a two parent family into an economically and culturally vulnerable single parent family or a dysfunctional two parent family.

Looking at the nuclear family as the ideal is short sighted. It iwould be like looking at a single Conestoga wagon, then saying it was the ideal way to move your family across the dangerous western frontier. Rather, it was the formation of many wagons into wagon trains that offered the ideal.

Wagon trains were made up of a number of families united in a purpose. Their purpose was not much different than what families face today. Their purpose was to deal with adversity while moving forward towards greater opportunity. Is their any nuclear, blended, single parent ,or any other type of family which does not have this dual purpose? Dealing with adversity and opportunity is the dual purpose of life.

This is not to imply that it takes a village to raise a child. It is an argument for braiding the nuclear family to its extended family. This in turn makes for stronger social capital and benificial ties to a wider community. Of course this also applies to single parent families.

This is not an argument for turning the clock back to a better time. Rather , it is a challenge to get back on the right path.

Imagine, a wagon train that has found it has wandered off the intended trail. A well led wagon train can pick up the correct trail at a point forward of where it left off. Thus, bypassing parts of the correct path. By moving forward, the wagon train can avoid wasting time, energy and resources. Too often, the argument for stronger families seems like a return to the past. In reality it is only a call to get back on the right path.

How did a wagon train fulfill its purpose?

First, came a bold view of the opportunity that was ahead. Next a realization that both expected and unexpected adversities required unity. Then came the many incremental steps that went into planning, funding, supplying and moving forward.

With this analogy, I hope to illustrate , that we make conscious efforts to form a bolder view of what a strong family really is.

Reinvigorate Fathers Day

Lets add something to the celebration of Fathers Day! It depends upon for what purpose and for what duration of time. I think matriarchs are very good at keeping their families united. Especially, as it concerns immediate economic needs. However, this type of strong family is more likely to dissipate it's power after the matriarch is either deceased or her economic well being has been assured.

On the other hand my observation is that families united by patriarchal motives have differing tendencies. I believe that patriarchal motives tend more toward a long lasting legacy. I think that many patriarchs may seem to be creating rivalries and creating competitors among family members. Especially, in how they play favorites among siblings. However, this tendency is designed to strengthen individuals or select individuals that aid the patriarchs long lasting legacy. In other words the family is united around the need for strength and around an authoritarian model. This serves a different purpose. A purpose that is aligned with the evolved patriarchal instincts and motives to participate in the nurturing process.

The rise in single moms along with families with fewer children has diminished much of the patriarchal motives for marriage. Furthermore, male dynastic instincts become latent as women have gained influence. This is not a feminist conspiracy. Rather, it is the result of women's rising status as heads of households, along with the natural motives of the child bearing women. It is the nature that leads to nurture, which in turn leads to family types.

It is my opinion, when there is an opportunity to blend patriarchal and matriarchal motives the result is an extraordinary family type. What we often see as dysfunctional family is the result of a failure to blend the motives of each gender towards a unified family scheme.

BAW: Guardianship Programs Help Black Grandparents Perpetuate Extended Family Traditions

The following article shows how our laws and government agencies can get behind extended family values. Who will be able to grasp what it means for family?
News - Post-Tribune (Northwest Indiana)

allAfrica.com: Zambia: Lupando Calls for Restoration of Extended Family Culture

allAfrica.com: Zambia: Lupando Calls for Restoration of Extended Family Culture

Supervisor candidate has $100,000 grubstake from family and friends

The following story is a great illustration of the power of extended family. An extended family can use the habit of contribution to extend the power of family. The wider family is supportive of and ready to invest in the personal growth of one member. It illustrates growth of the family power to create opportunity and deal with adversity.
Supervisor candidate has $100,000 grubstake from family and friends

What Diminishes The Power Of Our Families?

In my opinion, the biggest factor in diminishing the power of family, is thinking of family as insignificant. Sometimes this takes the form of purposely shunning nepotistic advantages. It is not that we may think of family as insignificant in our lives, but rather as insignificant when compared to the institutions which seem to be much larger. Such as Government, Schools, Businesses, Churches, Unions and other large institutions. Peer groups loom larger than family.

We have come to associate economic and social power with organizations which have benefited from urbanism and modernization. What seems to have been missed is how a few dynastic thinkers have adapted to change in ways that have increased the power of their family. Some are newly emerging families. Others are families that have adapted over the centuries to new conditions.

If you closely examine these few families, one thing is clear. They see their large extended family as significant or more significant than other institutions. Nepotistic advantage is not totally shunned. Often, they come from cultures that were more resistant to modernity.

In contrast, many moderns shun family influences. Often, family influence is shunned. Shunned in favor of:: individualism, the influence of peer groups or in favor of personal development outside of the family. While these are not purposely destructive of family life, they become part of an insidious process which diminishes the modern view of extended family. It is part of our individual experiences.

Unless one or more family members properly instills an appreciation for nepotistic advantage, extended family will be viewed as insignificant. The potential power of the family will be latent and diminished. In other words, sentiment looms larger than influence. Family rituals become less meaningful. Family members begin to choose peer groups over kinship groups. Benefits of family life are less connected to every day life.

It is similar to putting your money under a mattress and forgetting it is there. The power of your money diminishes with inflation. Until you realize the power of investing you gain nothing and allow the power to diminish.
You might think you value the money, but you act in ways that make it less significant.

Winston-Salem Journal | Ask Amy - HOW FAR IS CLOSE? George gets an opportunity to see what the consequences would be, had he never been born. He gets to see the value of his life. You see how his mother grows old as a childless widow. His uncle is sent off to an insane asylum . His brother dies as a young boy. And his wife lives life as a lonely spinster. George Bailey is not even a memory to his family and friends. Since George is not there to make his contributions to family and community the whole community suffers.

Now, I ask you to imagine the story line is turned around a bit. This time it is your life we examine in retrospect. And instead of your family and community without you, we see what your life would be like without your family. We look at those family members who have contributed not only to your life, but to your community.

What would we see? What lessons can we learn as our guardian angel guides us through this type of past? How does your real past life compare to this imagined past?

I would love to hear what you think you would see. It would be great to hear what lessons you will learn from this mental experiment. Please share them with us!

Later this month I will share the lessons I learn from this exercise.

Family Ties - The costs often affect society as a whole. The following example also illustrates how other institutions make such adaptive strategies a secondary function. Functions, such as passing on parenting skills, are primary within an extended family. In institutions like schools, the function is an afterthought and secondary.
The right lessons? from Guardian Unlimited: Mortar Board

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://goodsonsclub.blogspot.com/2006/08/right-lessons-from-guardian-unlimited.html' title='The right lessons? This is not an easy assumption to make. History seems to indicate; that like many talents, it is instinctive behavior. Instincts which some people have in a greater degree than others.

However, history also shows where a founding patriarch, (the one who has the instinct) seems to be able to pass dynastic techniques on to his heirs. Mayer Amschel Rothschild is a very good example. It is his example along with many others, which leads us to the assumption that dynastic thinking can be instilled. That it can be taught.

Make no mistake. This assumption does not mean everyone has the same dynastic capacity.

It may be, that dynastic instincts will be dormant until something triggers it. For example, many family founders seem to be men who lost their fathers early in life. Resulting in their having, at a young age, much family responsibility. Dynastic behavior may be triggered by having many children. Having many sons may be a particular trigger.

A shared family enterprise, may be another factor which accounts for dynastic behavior. To what degree is the right mate significant?

Some of us have a great capacity to learn music others less capacity. So too, some of us have a small capacity for dynastic thinking and others a great capacity. Just as many can derive great benefit from those who are great at music. Many may benefit from those with a great degree of dynastic abilities.

Learn From Those That Use Extended Family As Their Model:

To be informed about extended family issues I use Google Alerts. I have them alert me when they find the phrase "extended family" being used in a news item or on the web.

So often the phrase "like an extended family" comes up. Many times the phrase is used in the context of a group of unrelated people who "act like an extended family". It will bring to mind that; businesses, clubs, community groups, neighborhoods, schools, churches and even criminal gangs use the extended family as their model or as an ideal organizational structure.

Is it not ironic. As, this is a time when we increasingly live apart from our actual extended family.

From this observation, can we at least learn the following:

To value our own extended family.

To give some thought to the potential power of extended family resources.

To play active roles in keeping family members type='text'>Using The Modern Networking Organization As A Dynastic Model

The following compares the idea of Networlding vs Networking .
Look closely and you will see similarities with the principles of the The Good Sons Club and our concept of

The Dynamic Family Table.

Mutual Aid and Support resting upon the legs of

Contribution,Growth,Unity and Longevity

As mentioned in yesterdays post, the modern networking organization represents an opportunity for the wise dynast.

One opportunity: model the best groups. Model them for their ideas on building relationships.

Second, the opportunity to use networking groups as a means to intelligently expand the family's influence.

Also, using networking groups offers a way to create opportunity.

In addition, family leaders will have an opportunity to mitigate the influence peer groups have upon individaul family members. Allowing for peer groups to have positive influences, but doing so within the context of family. Thus, preventing peer groups from replacing family.

I would also stress that a family that has disparate occupations should especially use the model. Families that share a stake in a family business or occupation of course benefit. However, it is the family with disparate occupations that needs to unite around the concept of consciously and systematically uniting around shared relationships.

Adam Bellow in his book "In Praise of Nepotism" points out how the Kennedy family formed relationships that acted like "concentric rings" around the central core of the family. This was done by consciously networking and developing relationships.

If family is important, then have an importnat family!

SuccessNet from BNI

Looking for a Dynastic model? Try looking at today's networking organizations.
How and why do we use them as models?

SuccessNet from BNI

Today's networking groups are a substitute for strong extended family. In the past business networking was done through networks made primarily from family and close friends. One dynamic aspect of today's culture is the level to which peer groups become more influencing than kinship groups.

However, you can see the development as an opportunity for wise family leaders. If you look closely, you will see these are organization which can be braided with family. They are groups where a family with diverse occupations can employ entrepreneurial techniques. Techniques that were once reserved for the families that either shared occupations or shared a stake in the family business.

What can be learned from them?

They ask their members to contribute their relationships.

They find ways to meet regularly as a group. To meet they use either a common place, teleconferencing or on the internet.

The group is aimed at growing the influence of the group to the benefit of each member.

The best networking groups are supportive of each members personal growth.

The group has a stake in each members growth.

The group has an expectation of longevity.

Contribution, Growth, Unity and Longevity are the legs which networking groups rest upon.

The Standard | Online Edition

Family Ties: An Anchor For Your Soul!
The Standard Online Edition

Family business - The author is frank in saying that Joe Kennedy had some "unattractive" qualities. In addition the author admits that "Joe Kennedy's dynastic enterprise illuminates the darker side of nepotism: the fruit of an erotic drive so strong that it destroys the thing it loves."

In examining Joe Kennedy Adam Bellow concludes that "No one teaches these methods or skills"

In my opinion, Adam Bellow has taken the first step and become our teacher. His work "In Praise of Nepotism" provides us with the models to use and the author does a good job of observing the strategies that work, while pointing out the excesses to be avoided.

I have concluded that the Adam Bellow is correct about Joe Kennedy's greatness as a nepotist. Therefore: we would be wise to use him as a model.

"Wealth" by Stuart E. Warren Buffett's actions say something about dynastic wealth that is contradictory to his words. In the following article from the Innternational Herald Tribune, you will find many Buffett quotes. Many of the quotes would lead you to believe that Warren Buffett does not believe in dynastic wealth.

Look very closely at Warren Buffet's relationship to a younger Bill Gates. In that relationship you will see his actions speak otherwise. In short, if he had a son, daughter, nephew or niece as competent as Bill Gates, Buffett would have put the money in that persons hands.

Obviously, Buffett does not object to concentrated wealth. As that is exactly what he is doing with his bequest. Buffett also describes his view of those who live on inherited wealth. I think that view is simplistic and a generalization. It is a view which ignores the good that can be generated from dynastic wealth.

Buffett always intended to give it all away - Business - International Herald Tribune

As to the power of dynastic wealth I would refer to two books by two different authors:Family Capitalism by Harold James and Wealth by Stuart E. Lucas

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://goodsonsclub.blogspot.com/2006/06/warren-buffetts-actions-speak-louder.html' title='Warren Buffett's actions speak louder than his words:Buffett always intended to give it all away - Families like the Rothschild or the Kennedy clans. . Many more examples exist.

The record shows the dynastic thinking of Rothschild family founder Mayer Amschel Bauer. This man is able to pass on dynastic instructins to his sons. Mayer's instructions enables the family to operate as one strong unit over many centuries.

Is dynastic thinking learned or is it instinct? Is it like some instincts, dormant until something brings it out? Could it be that bearing many sons brings the instinct out? Is it an instinct held dormant by economic circumstance or operating despite circumstance?

Is dynastic thinking a natural part of our desire for self-actualization, A desire only fulfilled after security and other lower needs are met?

Is it an instinct that some have & others do not? type='text'>Fathers and Nepotism In A New Light

As we discuss fatherhood we will review some new and revised thinking about Nepotism.

As Adam Bellow states in his Book "In Praise Of Nepotism" :
"People who feel there's something missing in their family relationships are right: sons often complain they don't feel close enough to their fathers, and there's a reason-they are no longer on the veldt learning to hunt and trap game or working together in a craft or business. Without such shared pursuits, fathers have less occasion to teach their children about life and get the satisfaction that goes with it." Bellow feels that "emulating dynastic families would be a good way to overcome some of the biggest problems and dissatisfactions of modern life."

Stuart E. Lucas in his book "Wealth" seems to put yet another positive spin on Nepotism as he discusses a "Nepotistic Advantage".

More On Building Wealth

Stuart E. Lucas thee author of" Wealth" admits to a bias towards a multigenerational approach to building wealth. You will find that Lucas advocates taking advantage of what he calls "Nepotistic Advantage". Lucas points out how an individual family or investor may do better by pooling money.

Lucas has an approach that is totaly fitting with The Good Sons Club Principles. The author is excellent in describing how we can do a better job of choosing and managing our professional advisors. You will find the book is a better read than most financial management books. The drama and history of the authors own family makes for a good story. A humorous glossary also helps make this a good read.

Are We Prepared For The Care Giver Role?

Thoughtful and clear headed preparation always minimizes stress. Prevention and preparation work hand in hand. Sometimes we can prevent things from being worse. At other time we can prepare for the worst. Always we can embrace the way things are as an opportunity for growth.

Whenever I am in the midst of a health care crisis, I recall my grandmother. The lady was such a skilled care giver and a strong person. The fact is she grew strong as a result of trials by fire. A husband who had a lifelong battle with illness and seven children. All her children experienced illness and one that died of a childhood ailment. Extended family relied on her skills as did neighbors and friends. My grandmother was also skilled at preventing illness and was quick to make sure a small matter did not become a big one. It was with a combination of prevention and preparation.

Today we have many more tool;s to practice the art of care giver.
